Our history 

The outstanding quality of our bread and baked goods has a long tradition at Modersohn’s Mühlen- und Backbetrieb GmbH.

Our company history goes back to the end of the 19th century. Christian Modersohn founded the company in Lippstadt in 1876. Baked goods were produced and sold there, at Südertor, for 100 years. Eventually, space became scarce. In 1976, it was therefore decided to look for a new location for the company. This was found in the Benninghausen district of Lippstadt. Just one year later, in 1977, the first building was erected there. The energy center and mill were followed by the new administration building and the first production hall in 1981.

The move was worthwhile for Modersohn’s Mühlen- und Backbetrieb GmbH. At the new location, the company was able to develop pioneering, innovative baking processes and baking technology.

Modersohn’s Mühlen- und Backbetrieb GmbH has been part of the internationally active Mestemacher Group, headquartered in Gütersloh, since 1992. As a large-scale bakery, the family-owned company is the world market leader for bread specialties with a long-lasting freshness when unopened. Modersohn’s specializes in canned breads, Westphalian pumpernickel and wholemeal breads.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, production and site technology have been continuously expanded and revised – and new markets have been opened up as a result. As a result, an extension to the first warehouse was built in 1996/1997, and an additional 1,500 square meter production hall was added a year later. A cooling hall was built in 2021. The baking capacity was also expanded.

There is no end to the growth in sight. That is why the Benninghausen site has been undergoing further expansion since 2023. 7.2 million euros will be invested in the construction of a 3,000 square meter extension, which is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Offices, social and training rooms, optimized storage areas and the dispatch area with two loading ramps will be built.
